Mental Exhaustion for Christian Women in Business: Running It Through Hard Family Seasons | Set Apart Startup

When mental exhaustion has nothing to do with your business

If you're searching "how to reset when you're mentally exhausted" or "how do I keep my business going when life is hard" — this episode is for you. Because sometimes the hardest part of running a business isn't the business. It's the phone call before you open your laptop, the person who needs something when you have nothing left, the friction that starts your morning and follows you into your work until half of you is somewhere else. You're allowed to admit that's hard. You don't have to pretend you're fine to be faithful.

What Joseph did while his family wound was still open

Joseph's own brothers resented him, threw him in a pit, and sold him. That wound stayed unresolved for years. And yet, in Potiphar's house, "the Lord was with Joseph... and the Lord made all that he did to prosper in his hand" (Genesis 39:2-3). His work prospered in that season — not after the family drama was fixed, but in the middle of it. Joseph didn't wait for his family to be healed before he was faithful with what was in front of him.

When the people closest to you drain your focus

Sometimes the people closest to you interfere with your peace — not always meaning harm, but leaning on you when you don't have the capacity to hold yourself. It creates friction that pulls your focus, your emotions, your whole day, and none of that energy goes into what God called you to build. Recognize what it often is: spiritual warfare, because the enemy knows the closest relationships are where it hurts. But also know God sometimes allows it to build resilience and train you to stay calm. The pressure isn't only an attack — sometimes it's the training ground.

A better way to run your business through a hard family season

Pray, and don't do it alone — get your prayer warriors praying with you. Pray over the people themselves and ask God to intervene, while you set a healthy boundary; you can cover someone in prayer and still protect your peace. Ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom to balance your emotions. Declare war on the stronghold in your mind in Jesus' name. Put on scripture and worship music to shift the atmosphere. Remember God has not given you a spirit of fear. Recognize manipulation and be assertive. Journal what you feel so it has somewhere to go. Rest — take the day off if it's too much. And forgive them, letting God be your vindicator, so your energy goes back into what you're building. What they meant for evil, God meant for good.

Your next faithful step

The next time friction pulls you off your work, pause and pray one sentence before you react: ask God to hold your peace and handle what you can't. Then set down the offense and go back to the one thing that's actually yours to do today.
