Business Burnout: When You Feel Ready to Give Up

Why business burnout doesn't always look like burnout

Burnout doesn't always show up like a crash. Sometimes it looks like opening your laptop and already feeling tired — staying productive on the outside while feeling completely spent on the inside. If you've ever sat down at the end of the day and thought, "I have nothing left to give," this is the place we're starting.

There's a prophet in the Bible who knew that exact place. His name is Elijah. In 1 Kings 19, right after the biggest win of his ministry, he sits down under a broom tree and says, "I have had enough, Lord."

What God does when you've had enough

Here's what to notice: God does not tell Elijah to get up and prove himself again. He doesn't hand him a new assignment. He doesn't ask why his faith got so small. He lets him sleep. Then an angel wakes him with fresh bread and water, and Elijah eats and sleeps again. And then the angel comes back a second time — and this is the anchor to hold onto, 1 Kings 19:7: "Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you."

The journey is too much for you. God said that — not as a criticism, as care. He knew what was ahead of Elijah, and He knew Elijah could not carry it from an empty place. So before there was any next step, there was rest. There was food. Not once, twice.

The quiet signs of burnout in business

A lot of us are trying to rebuild from under the broom tree. The business stalled, or life happened, or you burned out on the version of business you built the first time. And now you want to rebuild — but you're trying to do it with the same exhaustion that got you here. You close the laptop at night and you're still behind. You snap at the people you love and feel guilty about it. You keep telling yourself next week will be lighter, and it never is. And underneath it, a quieter thought: I should be able to handle this. A faithful woman would push through. But look at the broom tree — God did not shame Elijah for needing rest. He met him in the tired place and strengthened him there.

My own broom tree

I have to be honest with you, because I have my own broom tree. You've heard me mention my print-on-demand season. What I didn't tell you is how it ended. I was creating design after design and the sales were not coming. The market was crowded, and everyone kept saying the answer was to invest in a design course — and I didn't have the money for one. So I kept pushing with what I had, working harder at something that wasn't working. And somewhere in there the thought crept in: maybe I'm just not meant to do this. Maybe running my own business is a dream for another woman, and I should let it go.

That was my broom tree. I wasn't dramatic about it. I just sat down inside, the way Elijah did. And like Elijah, I prayed. Honestly, I cried. I told God I had had enough. And I did not get a strategy in that moment — I got rest first. It was only after I stopped striving that I could hear Him clearly. And what I heard was not "push harder." It was "move in a new direction." The dream was not dead. The direction was wrong. But I could not have heard that from an exhausted place. The rest came first, and then the redirection.

Rest is not the reward for rebuilding — it's the prerequisite

So maybe the next step after burnout is not a strategy. Maybe it's sleep. Maybe it's a real meal, a walk without your phone, canceling one thing this week, or letting yourself stop pretending you're fine. Because you are a person before you are a business owner, and the rebuild God has for you is not meant to be carried from empty. You don't have to rebuild from exhaustion. You don't have to solve everything today. If you've had enough, then maybe the most faithful thing you can do right now is receive what God is already offering: rest, nourishment, and room to recover.

Your next faithful step

This week, sit with one question: what is one thing I need to receive before I try to rebuild? Not do. Receive.
